If Raking Leaves You in Pain

If Raking Leaves You in Pain

Autumn is perhaps the most beautiful season, especially here in New England but it also means it’s time for yard work. Raking leaves can be a great workout since you can burn up to 300 calories per hour. Unfortunately, since we only rake the leaves a few times a year, our bodies are not conditioned for the stress load. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 28,000 people suffered injuries from raking in 2008.

September 18, 1895:
Dr. DD Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment to Harvey Lillard (a man who was completely deaf). While checking Mr. Lillard’s spine, he felt that one of the spinal vertebrae was slightly out of its normal position. Because he had been studying the connection between the spine and the central nervous system, he knew that Harvey’s spine needed to be corrected. Dr. Palmer gently adjusted the vertebra back into its normal position. At that moment, Harvey Lillard’s hearing was restored.
Sound like hocus pocus? That’s what most people thought in 1895.
With advancements in research and knowledge of the human body, we know that spinal misalignments (no matter how slight or severe) can have an effect on the central nervous system.

While bone-setting dates back to early Greece and Egypt, we are celebrating the 118th anniversary of the first chiropractic adjustment.  DD Palmer and his son BJ Palmer formed and developed the chiropractic profession based on the science of the spine and nervous system, the art of adjusting, and the philosophy of the body’s natural ability to heal from the inside.

Protect Your Child From Chronic Pain

Protect Your Child From Chronic Pain

The last time in history that so many children had back and neck problems was over 100 years ago, before there were child labor laws. According to Dutch researchers and surgeons, “children ages 8-18 are receiving care for back problems previously only seen in hardworking adults over 50 years old”. Dr. Soeterbroek reports that “it makes no difference to the body whether you’re hunched over in a cigar factory or spending eight hours over an iPad”. The article also confirmed that “attention to posture has almost disappeared the world over. It’s becoming accepted as normal that children and teenagers have poor posture”.

Chiropractic and Mental Health

The Chiropractic adjustment can have profound effects on quality of life by improving the function of all body systems. Knowing this, shouldn’t every person be allowed access to chiropractic care regardless of symptoms, age, and culture?

Besides the growing body of Chiropractic research, there are two significant reports from the 1930s, which exhibit the need for Chiropractic care for everyone, including those with varying levels of mental health. This summary of the reports is meant to enlighten readers about the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments for nerve system health, not just pain symptoms.

In the 1930’s, one group of Chiropractors spent fifteen months at the Kentucky Houses of Reform (a Correctional facility)[1], while the other report is from the Forest Park Davenport Clinic (a Chiropractic Psychiatric Hospital)[2].

But I Go To The Gym…

If you are a gym-goer, does that mean you are immune from illness and injuries? If you asked me this question even three years ago, I would say – YES! Exercise is the best thing you can do for yourself. I believed this so much that I became a personal trainer and made sure that people in my community were exercising.

However, while I was spending so much time working in different gyms, I started to question this. How come so many of the “regulars” still get sick and complain of pain?

Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Why would a child need to see a chiropractor? Children are healthy and should not have any pain, right? Children do not have years of bad posture. They do not have stress from a ten-hour workday that gives them tension headaches, as do some adults. While all this is true, children are exposed to much worse traumas than we typically think. Even if it is a natural birth (meaning without a c-section), the doctor uses the baby’s delicate head and neck as leverage to deliver the baby.

Johns Hopkins Hospital did a study to measure the amount of force required to deliver a baby naturally. They found that depending on the technique that was used, the force ranged from 6.5 – 16 pounds. In the presence of a difficult delivery, the doctor may be required to use a vacuum or forceps, which attach to the baby’s head and pull the newborn out of the birth canal using up to 140-pounds of force. If that much extra force is necessary in a natural birth, imagine what is required during a c-section, when the ability of the mother to contribute to the pushing is eliminated.

Pregnancy Chiropractic

Pregnancy Chiropractic

Most women are under the impression that pregnancy is a nine-month time frame dedicated to sacrificing your body in order to give new life. Of course it is true that, in the end, those nine months will certainly be worth the pain – but what if you could spend that time enjoying your life and embracing the experience of life within you, rather than wishing the time away?

One of the most common complaints of pregnant women is back pain, which is caused by the dramatic change in posture, weight distribution, and center of gravity. As the baby grows and places demands on the mother’s body, ligaments begin to play a large role in the symptoms of pain. These ligaments connect the uterus to the spine, as seen in the picture. Three different situations occur here:

Chiropractic Gardening Tips for Avoiding Back Pain

Gardening is usually one of the first activities of the season where we subject ourselves to sudden bursts of activity and really put our backs at risk. With spring in the air, you look forward to getting out in the garden but you’re not looking forward to feeling sore after all the kneeling, pulling, leaning, and twisting. After a long winter of not moving our bodies this way, it’s important to prepare your spine, joints, and muscles. Growing up on a farm in North Reading MA, yard work has been important in my family and there was never any time for a day off because of back pain.

Here are some tips to help you have a relaxing, enjoyable, and pain-free gardening season:

  • Warm Up and Stretch: As with any form of exercise, stretching must be done before and after the activity. Take a short brisk walk first to warm up your muscles and get your body in work mode. Stretching should target your back and core, shoulders and arms, and leg muscles.
  • Minimize Repetitive Motions: Don’t try to get everything done in one session. Alternating tasks is a good way to break up the repetitive motions.
  • Digging: Make sure you keep the shovel in front of you and avoid twisting motions. If you need to get to an area on the side, re-position yourself to keep the shovel in line with your body. The same goes for raking – pull the rake towards your body, not off to the sides.
