Insurance FAQs

  • What insurances do we accept?

    • Mass General Brigham (previously AllWays)
    • Blue Cross Blue Shield
    • Tufts Commercial
    • Tufts Public
    • Medicare
    • UniCare/GIC
  • What is Medically Necessary Chiropractic Care?

    • If you choose to use your health insurance to pay for your care, we must abide by their rules. Health insurance allows you to use your benefits for MEDICALLY NECESSARY CHIROPRACTIC CARE only.

    • Medicare sets the standards for most other health insurance plans and they define the difference between medically necessary care and maintenance care as the following:

      • “Maintenance therapy includes services that seek to prevent disease, promote health and prolong and enhance the quality of life, or maintain or prevent deterioration of a chronic condition. When further clinical improvements cannot reasonably be expected from continuous ongoing care, and the chiropractic treatment becomes supportive rather than corrective in nature, the treatment is then considered maintenance therapy.”

    • Unfortunately, medical care in the United States for the most part is ‘sick care’, not healthcare. Once acute symptoms are gone or stabilized to a lesser intensity, medically necessary care is complete. Then insurance won’t cover anything else even if it is to maintain the progress that we have made.

    • Here’s an example: Your chiropractic benefits through your health insurance say that you have 20 visits per year. You start seeing a chiropractor and your symptoms subside at visit 10. You love feeling so flexible and pain free and you want to keep it that way. You know that a month of sitting at your desk will bring back the pain so you want to stay on top of it and continue seeing the chiropractor on a regular basis and you have 10 visits remaining. Can you use these 10 visits? Is this Medically Necessary care or Maintenance care? In most instances, this would be Maintenance care and you are not allowed to use the remaining 10 visits. We know this doesn’t seem fair – after all, you’re paying for your health insurance and you want to maximize your benefits but these are their rules and we must obey them in order to avoid insurance fraud.

    • Another example is if you have used your 20 visits for the year but you want to come back to your chiropractor to maintain your spinal health for wellness purposes. Your insurance company may tell you that you can acquire more visits with authorization. However, in order to get additional visits for you, we must submit evidence to your insurance carrier proving that these will be used for medically necessary care. Unfortunately, we are frequently asked to get authorization for additional visits for wellness care and while we would love for health insurance to pay for your wellness, it would be considered insurance fraud so we are unable to do so.

    • Health insurance companies want chiropractors to tell their patients: “Don’t come back unless your pain returns or you injure yourself again”. This is a really hard thing for us to say because it completely goes against our wellness philosophy.

    • So how can you continue chiropractic care once your symptoms are under control? We have Out-of-Pocket rates that help make chiropractic care affordable without insurance. In fact, with some of our pre-paid packages, the pricing is cheaper than some co-pays with insurance.

    • Our Out-of-Pocket rates are as follows:

      • New Patient Appointment: $146 (includes Exam, Adjustments and Manual Therapy)
      • One single Follow Up Appointment: $65 (includes Adjustments and Manual Therapy)
      • 4-pack of follow up visits: $60/visit ($240)
      • 12-pack of follow up visits: $50/visit ($600)
      • 24-pack of follow up visits: $40/visit ($960)

About Polarity Therapy

The purpose of Polarity Therapy is personal transformation. It is realigning the body to be in harmony with the soul.   This somatic therapy enables you to look at what you’re carrying in your body as a blueprint for your life.  It’s said your body is a reflection of your thoughts, your beliefs, your emotions and experience.  Polarity Therapy is a chance to release your buried treasures… to open up the obstructions, the blockages, the pain, the difficulties, the distortions in the body.

In addition to working with the body, the Practitioner supports you with verbal communication and reflective listening.  You are guided into greater awareness, and have space to re-negotiate what you’re holding onto and what you can let go of.   Additional resources for nutrition, exercises and lifestyle deepen the process of transformation if you choose to take advantage of them.  Polarity Therapy is a truly holistic practice … it can work for anyone, in any state of health:  it meets you where you are at, and inspires positive changes that are just right for you.

Allergy Relief with Essential Oils

An allergy is an over-reaction of our immune system to certain substances such as dust, pollen, animal hair, synthetic materials or foods.  Common symptoms triggered by allergies include runny nose, sneezing, and red, itchy eyes. There are several essential oils for allergies that can help you to relieve and treat the common symptoms of allergic reactions.  Essential oils serve as a natural and safe way to treat the symptoms of allergies, boost our immune systems, and to feel better. Below is a list of our favorites and how to use them!

1. Lavender Oil: it works as a natural antihistamine and possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties to treat and relieve most allergic reactions. It works great for treating skin rashes or headaches. Not only will it ease your allergic reactions, it has a calming and relaxing effect on both body and mind.

Diffuse: Lavender essential oil can be used in a cold-air diffuser to treat allergies. Diffuse for 15 minutes every hour for the best effect or diffuse next to your bed to promote a better night’s rest.

Inhalation: Rub 1 to 2 drops of lavender essential oil into the palms of your hands. Cup them over your nose and take 4-6 deep and slow breaths.

2. Peppermint Oilhas a strong, fresh and minty aroma that works wonders to treat allergic reactions, especially those that cause respiratory or digestive issues. Peppermint essential oil has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties that come in handy soothing allergies and the painful conditions associated with them. Peppermint oil helps to open the airways, improve breathing and ease congestion as well as other symptoms of respiratory allergies

To make a chest rub: dilute 2 to 3 drops in a carrier oil of your liking and massage your chest for a few minutes to ease your allergic reactions.

Diffuse: Peppermint oil that is diffused and inhaled can oftentimes immediately unclog the sinuses and offer relief to scratchy throats. Diffuse peppermint oil according to the directions on your diffuser throughout the day or night.

Inhalation: rub 1 to 2 drops of peppermint essential oil into the palms of your hands. Cup them over your nose and take 4 to 6 deep and slow breaths.

3. Lemon Oilsupports lymphatic system drainage and helps with overcoming respiratory conditions. Lemon essential oil works as a natural antihistamine, relieves excess mucus, and cools down the inflammation which is the result of an allergic reaction. Lemon oil is often used for its disinfectant properties, but can also help to combat seasonal allergies and asthma attacks.

Diffuse: When diffused, lemon oil can kill bacteria and eliminate allergy triggers in the air. Lemon essential oil works best in combination with lavender and peppermint. Add a few drops of each to your diffuser and enjoy!

4. Eucalyptusopens up the lungs and sinuses, thereby improving circulation and reducing symptoms of allergies. Eucalyptus oil produces a cold sensation in the nose that helps to improve airflow. It is one of the best oils for allergies as it supports the respiratory system and it can also ease seasonal allergies and asthma attacks. Eucalyptus oil is most effective when applied topically or when used as a steam inhalation.

Topically: always dilute eucalyptus essential oil in a carrier oil first. Apply onto your neck, chest, or bottom of your feet.

Inhalation: Pour boiling water in a bowl and add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Drape a towel over your head and breathe in the steam.

Also noteworthy are Tea Tree and Basil Essential Oils. Tea Tree can destroy airborne pathogens that cause allergies. Diffusing tea tree oil in your home will kill mold, bacteria, and fungi. Basil oil reduces the inflammatory response of allergens. It also supports the adrenal glands, which are involved in producing over 50 hormones that drive almost every bodily function.

5 Tips for a Healthy July 4th

5 Tips for a Healthy July 4th:

Some quick tips for feeling healthy this 4th of July!

fireworks
1. Think before you drink
One sugary margarita can have 600-800 calories! Even lemonade can have over 100 calories. Stay hydrated with water.
2. Start an active tradition
How about a morning hike, neighborhood volleyball game, or family kickball tournament?
3. Keep desserts small
The difference between a large slice of cake and small one can literally be hundreds of calories!
4. Use small plates
Research shows that people who use smaller plates consume 50% fewer calories!
5. Watch others
When you see someone who is limping, can’t stand for very long, or constantly rubbing their shoulders, recommend that they take action by seeing a chiropractor. Too many people are living in pain when they don’t need to be!

Happy Independence Day!

Boston Strong

As I remember this day one year ago, I am grateful for all the good people in this world. The media exposes us to all the negative news that we sometimes forget all the positive, caring, and giving people around us.

One of the most positive and healing things we can do is express our gratitude. I am grateful for my health, my family and friends, this community, my profession. I am grateful for love, laughing, and nature. I am grateful to have a job where people come for healing – body, mind, and soul. I am grateful to have all these things to be grateful for! Boston Strong Chiropractor

As a thank you to all those who continue to run the Boston Marathon and keep Boston Strong, Denaro Chiropractic is giving 15% off for all runners until April 30, 2014.

This is a blog post that I wrote last year after the marathon:

As Boston and those affected by the Marathon bombings slowly get back to normal, we are surrounded by reassuring phrases like, “Boston Strong” and “Run For Boston”. While the attacks cannot be undone, it makes us remember how valuable every single day is and that we must cherish our family, friends, and health. It’s easy to simply get back into our regular routine and push the memories of that Monday morning to the back of our minds.

Just a few days ago, I was feeling lazy and contemplating if I should go for a jog or just sleep in. I started thinking about the victims who are still in the hospital with limb amputations and shattered lives. There was no way I was going to use my legs just to stay in bed. My new mantra is, “Because I Can!”

I will run because I can. I will do push ups because I can. I will work because I can. I will stand on my own two feet because I can. I will tell my family that I love them because I can. I will be in charge of my own health because I can.

This situation makes me even more proud to be a Chiropractor in Massachusetts. There is nothing better than helping people feel good to go! I want everyone to be able to run because they can! No matter what it is that is holding you back from using your two legs, two arms, and core, you have the potential to do the activities that you love. If you find yourself saying, “I can’t”, then it’s time to make your health and your body a priority. If you’re too busy or have a list of excuses, then at least do it for the people who had their health taken away from them.

We are Boston Strong. It’s time to make yourself strong, too – because you can!
